Dear Colleagues: We learned this morning (June 15, 2016) of the death of Dr. Virginia Higbie; former Dean and friend and supporter of our college. She served as Dean from 1988-2000 and as interim Dean in 2008.
It was through Dr. Higbie’s efforts that CHSS developed successful graduate and undergraduate programs in social work, nursing and public health sciences. Dr. Higbe also worked with the New Mexico legislature to secure funding for the CHSS building we now enjoy on the Las Cruces Campus. Her dedication to professional programs was instrumental in shaping the College into what it has become today – a professional college devoted to preparing students to work in three areas of essential importance to the State of New Mexico – nursing, social work and public health. Her vision for CHSS has resulted in the development of hundreds of professionals whose careers are devoted to helping others. Because of her commitment and dedication to the College, her family and friends established the Virginia C. Higbie Endowed Scholarship in 2009.
On a personal note, Dr. Higbie reached out to me the first week I served as Dean of this college and offered me her guidance and support. She was a wonderful champion for students, our professional programs and the College and will be missed. We thank her for her work and send our deepest sympathies to her family on her loss.
