From the President’s Activity Report (November 5-11)

Office of the Dean

  • The Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) sponsored two presentations at Alma ‘d Arte High School last week, where the HSS Student Ambassadors discussed the importance of health related fields. Junior and senior students were given information on the many health professions NMSU has to offer during the interactive discussions.  These on-going discussions benefit both SoAHEC as a tool to educate our community and for the Student Ambassadors by improving their leadership skills.
  • In Development, Kim Gear scheduled the College’s first quarterly mentoring lunch for nursing students this week. A dedicated HSS donor and advisory board member met with students and learned about their backgrounds, achievements, and the personal goals as a first step in providing career mentoring. The lunch was very beneficial from the students’ perspectives to receive feedback as they finish their final semester for their nursing degrees.  Students are looking forward to more mentoring opportunities in the spring.

School of Social Work

  • Erika Gergerich, assistant professor, and Dr. Maria Gurrola, Associate Professor, presented a paper, Evaluating Professional Documentation and Writing Ability in Senior Undergraduate Social Work Students, at the Annual Program Meeting of the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) in Atlanta, Georgia on November 5.The presentation was based on their experiences with creating and implementing a strategy for the School of Social Work’s assessment of the professional writing skills of our undergraduate social work students.
