College of Health and Social Services, Dean Donna Wagner

Office of the Dean   The Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) sponsored a suturing workshop this week led by Dr. Michael Keller, a board certified general and vascular surgeon. The workshop was held at Mountain View Regional Medical Center on August 25 and afforded healthcare workers the opportunity to earn required CEUs.

School of Nursing   The School of Nursing (SON) celebrated the NMSU-Grants campus incoming nursing cohort on Tuesday, August 23 by holding a White Coat Ceremony for Level-one students for Fall 2016.  Six new SON students have been enrolled into the program.  Go Aggie nurses!

School of Social Work   The School of Social Work hosted its annual faculty retreat at the Corbett Center on Monday, August 15. The retreat served as the first official faculty meeting of the academic year and an opportunity to welcome four new faculty members:

  • Associate Professor Megan Finno-Velasquez’s research interests include children and families; child welfare and immigration policy; maltreatment prevention in Latino immigrant communities; and cultural competence in child welfare services.
  • Assistant Professor Stacy Gherardi is actively researching education technology and inclusive education; educational and social policy; school-based mental health policy; and identification of students with emotional disabilities.
  • Assistant Professor Erika Gergerich’s research agenda focuses on community based social work, and aging and health policy.
  • College Assistant Professor Phillis Newton is working with La Clinica de Familia on workforce development that will enhance the availability and quality of social and therapeutic services throughout Dona Ana County.
